Imagine being in a state of constant danger, not knowing what will happen on your drive to work or school, but knowing that your chances of being murdered have more than doubled in the past four months. Can you even fathom what it feels like to think that your life could end any minute, and that the chances of you being able to stop it depends solely on your countrymen to your left or right? So many people in the United States have no idea what this feeling is like. They do not understand what it feels like to be truly in danger. It is easy to be in sunny southern California and pretend that you get it, and that everyone else is overly excited by what is happening in the world. It’s simple to sit in your posh living room, with your family, watching the newest episode of Orange is the New Black or whatever the new hip show is, not realizing how dangerous other parts of the world are. Sure, it’s easy…. But it is also ignorant and foolish. You have no idea what it is like to be afraid to leave your home each day; to go to work, school or the dog park. You are the very definition of privilege.
In Europe, people are coming together, uniting in the face of their fears. They are not continuing life as if nothing is wrong. They’re not ignoring the growing danger within their communities. They are seeking aid from each other, since their elected officials seem to be hellbent on completely ignoring the increasing violence in their nations cities. Here in the U.S., people are attacking others for having these fears. Citizens, ignoring what is happening throughout the world, while protesting legislation and decisions designed to keep them safe. Not only do they oppose the man trying to keep them all safe, but they oppose their fellow citizens, whose numbers are growing because their eyes have opened to the dangers that threatens our world today. Here’s the difference… London is protesting refugees entering their country, and you are protesting against keeping them out of ours. That is your privilege. It isn’t white, it isn’t black… It is American.
This wasn’t enough? What about these? Is this enough?
How would you feel if you saw this on every street corner? This is what we saw in Afghanistan. This is the look of a nation in peril, just like the Middle East has been.
It is time to wake up. Your privilege is showing.
This isn’t news. You have been ignoring it. Take off your blinders and do something.

Willful Ignorance – A state and practice of ignoring any sensory input that appears to contradict one’s inner model of reality.
